Coffee Ring

Margaret Galliher Bates would make this coffee ring every Christmas.

   6-1/2` cups sifted flour
   1/3 cup sugar
   3 teaspoons salt
   1/3 cup shortening
   1 teaspoon cinnamon
   2 cups warm water
   2 packages dry yeast
   2 eggs
   1/2 cup raisins
   Melted butter
   1 cup sifted confectioners' sugar
   2 tablespoons milk
   1/2 teaspoon vanilla


Combine warm water, sugar and yeast. Stir until dissolved. Add salt and 2 cups of the flour. Beat 2 minutes with electric mixer. Add eggs and shortening. Beat 1 minute. Work in remaining flour.
Roll dough into 9 x 13 inch rectangle. Brush with melted butter. Combine brown sugar, cinnamon and raisins. Sprinkle over dough. Roll up, beginning with long end. Place sealed edge down and join ends to form a circle. With scissors cut at 1 inch intervals, almost to the center of the ring. Twist slices. Cover, let rise in warm place for 40 to 45 minutes. Bake in 350° F. oven for 30-35 minutes. While warm, frost with icing.
